We enjoy a proud legacy of selfless sacrifice and service to country and community that spans decades. In the late 1930s, more than 150,000 volunteers with a love for aviation argued for an organization to put their planes and flying skills to use in defense of their country. As a result, the Civil Air Patrol was born one week prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Thousands of volunteer members answered America's call to national service and sacrifice by accepting and performing critical wartime missions. Assigned to the War Department under the jurisdiction of the Army Air Corps, the contributions of Civil Air Patrol, including logging more than 500,000 flying hours, sinking two enemy submarines, and saving hundreds of crash victims during World War II, are well documented.

After the war, a thankful nation understood that Civil Air Patrol could continue providing valuable services to both local and national agencies. On July 1, 1946, President Harry Truman signed Public Law 476 incorporating Civil Air Patrol as a benevolent, nonprofit organization. On May 26, 1948, Congress passed Public Law 557 permanently establishing Civil Air Patrol as the auxiliary of the new U.S. Air Force. Three primary mission areas were set forth at that time: aerospace education, cadet programs, and emergency services. (Source: Civil Air Patrol)

Official Release from the USO (interview with C/SrA Bowman)

C/SrA Garrett Bowman

When did you start with USO Delaware?

 December 2012

Is there a specific reason why you wanted to support our military & their families?

The military deserves respect for fighting our battles; they are the ones protecting us so we should support them and their families. I also feel that our military has many HEROES that go unrecognized or aren’t given the credit they deserve. I feel I can give back to them by volunteering with the USO to support them.

Tell us about YOU? What is your background, career, hobby or favorite family event that other people didn't know about you!

I am 15 years old and a Senior Airmen in the Civil Air Patrol. I find great interest in the military, and my favorite activities are playing Lacrosse, Wrestling and volunteering. I am also an active participant in the Student Council.

Do you volunteer anywhere else?

Yes, I volunteer at the Delaware Hospital for the chronically ill where I enjoy fishing with the guys and playing dominoes with the ladies. I have volunteered with New Castle County Safety Town to help educate children in safety. I also will stay after school and help teachers.

Have you ever been affiliated with the military in the states? Overseas?

Yes. (Air Force Auxiliary) Civil Air Patrol

Do you have family members/relatives in the military? Are any deployed at this time?

Yes, I have family in the military but only one of my cousins is deployed.
